Though This is not niche of my blog and i am not an expert on the topic ,but my readers wants a post on this so i am just sharing my experience.I was not having any laptop or desktop till first year of my engineering.My typing speed was also very bad.Below mentioned approach and few months of practice helped me a lot.
1.Be familiar with the keyboard
Be familiar with the arrangement of the keys on keyboard.Try to remember the sequence of the keys or make a virtual picture of the keyboard in your mind,so that when you think of typing ‘N’ your right hand finger will automatically go to middle of the second last line of the keyboard.
2. Fingers on keyboard
Spread your fingers on keyboard. Don’t just hit the keys with one finger only.Use all your fingers to reach entire keyboard.Hit the keys on extreme right end with left pinky, keys on middle with both hands ring and middle fingers similarly keys on extreme left with right pinky. You can find many websites describing this technique ,you don’t need to follow all this ,but try to reach all extreme ends of keyboard with less movement of your hand.
3. Avoid hitting keys accidentally
Try not to hit wrong keys accidentally.If you hit wrong keys , you will end up making corrections by hitting backspace and typing again which will slow down your speed .
Use keyboard shortcuts to improve typing speed.Using mouse will take more time as it involves shifting your hand from keyboard to mouse , perform task and again shift your hand from mouse to keyboard .All this can be avoided if you start using shortcuts. At least try using shortcuts for copy, cut, paste, undo, redo, select , select all , bold , underline , save a document.This will drastically improve your typing.
Practice makes a man perfect and this is also applicable for typing.While practicing try to keep an eye on both the screen and on the keys which you are hitting.Type at least 15 – 20 minutes a day for one month.This will help you to improve your typing.
There are few other points.
Use a keyboard with which you are comfortable.If you are not comfortable with simple keyboard try a ergonomic keyboard.Ergonomic keyboards are designed to minimize muscle strain and other related problems.
Try a keyboard with comparatively big keys with concave surface .This type of keyboards are fit for finger shape and minimize wrong key stroke.
Use comfortable chair while typing.
